Levros - Greece
In the capital Mytilini the archaeological museum houses some interesting artefacts and an imposing Byzantine castle looms over the town surrounded by pine forest, providing a popular spot for picnickers.

The museum of natural history in the village of Vrisa on the southern coast has an excellent display of fossils dating back 5.5 million years.
To the west of the island there is a petrified forest that some experts believe could be 20 million years old and you can book an excursion from Skala Eresou to visit a museum about the forest, which is located in the pretty fishing port of Sigri.
