  There are 4 (sub)divisions of evil forces:
1; Authorities, the demons of the highest places, like satan.
2; Powers, they are the demons who are leaders under satan
3; Rulers of the darkness of this world. The Hungarian translation is the best here: The judges of darkness of these world (ez élet sötétségének világbírói),
4; Spiritual `hosts' of wickedness (these are not demons, but some creatures (not daimons but daimonions). They are not acting like fallen angels (Derek Prince). It is not easy to locate them but if you are going to places of magic, astrology, expositions of paintings (paintings with many strange figures like from greek mythology of modern fantasy figures as Lord of the Rings), Game contests, game card exchanges... you'll feel their presence.  (CWWW)
  In addition, it should be noted that the demons of this world do not act alone.  They are organized and subdivided into groups or “ranks”, more or less, and as such
they have over them a boss or supervisor, if you will.  That boss or supervisor, as we saw earlier, is the devil (aka, Satan, or Lucifer).  Because he is the most
powerful of all God’s created creatures, and because Adam’s fall in the beginning transferred ownership of this world from mankind to him (more or less), he is
often referred to as the prince or god of this world (John 16:11; I Corinthians 4:4).

"When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.

Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation." (Matthew 12: 43-45)

Interpretation

1.  The very first sentence tells you right off the bat that you are dealing with a demonic spirit who has been cast out of someone. The verse says - "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man."

An unclean spirit is a demonic spirit. The fact that it is going out of the man means the demon was on the inside of the man. And if the demon is going out of the man, then he had to be cast out of him by either another Christian or direct by God Himself. Otherwise, the demon would have never left the man on his own. Once a demon is able to get inside of someone, they will not leave unless they are cast out by either God or a Christian acting under God's leading and authority to cast the demon out. ......................................................................................
 

  1. Bind all the lesser demons under the chief demon, and then cast out the chief demon with all of the lesser demons bound to him.
     
  2. Or cast out each one of the demons one by one.

The first way would obviously be the quickest and easiest, but you have to let God decide which of the two strategies He wants to go with on a particular deliverance. Sometimes God may want to cast out each one of them one by one. The reason being is that He may want the person to know what demons were inside of him and exactly why they were inside of him in the first place.   WHAT ARE DEMONS?
A. Evidence fr om the Scriptures points to them as being fallen angels.
2 Peter 2:4 - "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;"
Jude 6 - "And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;"
Revelation 12:7-9 "And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, {8} but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. {9} So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
There are some other views that have existed to explain their existence.
Justin Martyr (c. 150 a.d.) believed that they were the offspring of angels and men, based on Genesis 6:2-4.
The Greeks thought that they were the spirits of evil men.
B. Demons are real. They are not just illnesses, etc.

Illnesses and demon possession are clearly differentiated in the New Testament
Matthew 4:24 - "Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them."
Matthew 10:8 - ""Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."
Mark 1:32- "At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.

  STRATEGIES OF SATAN & HIS DEMONS
On one occasion Jesus said, ‘‘Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? 1. There is only one Devil, Gr: diabolos , "an accuser, slanderer"
2. There are many demons, Gr: daimonion "a knowing one"

b) Mary had "7 demons cast out of her": Mk 16:9; Lk 8:2
2. Demons could possess animals, swine: Mk 5:13
3. Demons differed in their power from one another, "this kind" Mk 9:29 and evil: Mt 12:45
  DEMONS COMPLAIN TO WITCH DOCTORS
In one area of Bihar, a village lived in fear of its four witch-doctors, who controlled people by cursing their cattle and their relatives.
When the Christian evangelists arrived, these witch-doctors warned them that they would be cursed, too.
The Christians continued to love the people in Jesus' name, and in a few weeks the witch-doctors came to ask the secret of their power. They had called up demonic powers to attack the Christians, but the demons had returned saying, "We can do nothing against them, as they are surrounded by angels and by fire." As they spoke with the evangelists, the conviction of God fell on all four and they were converted and delivered from evil! The whole village followed, amazed at God's power.

4 Levels of Spiritual Warfare Against Demonic Spirits
  1. And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe. In my name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover." (Mark 16:15-18)
     
  2. "Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee ... the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord." (Luke 4:14-18)
     
  3. "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you." (Luke 10:19)
     
  4. "Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick." (Luke 9:1)
     
  5. "And He called the twelve to Him, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits ... And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them." (Mark 6:7,13)
     
  6. "And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave then power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease." (Matthew 10:1)
     
  7. "But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:6-8)

Angels and Demons

Lucifer, whose name means “light bearer” or “morning star”, is not God’s equal. Like all beings, he is merely a creation of God and must submit to His sovereignty. (Ps 148:1-5; Col 1:16)
Lucifer held an exalted position in heaven. He may have been a cherub. (Ezk 28:14) Cherubs are high-ranking angels whose ministry involves, in some way, guarding the Lord’s holiness. This position would have allowed Lucifer to possibly be closer to God than any other creature.
But Lucifer wasn’t satisfied with simply being in the presence of God’s throne. He became filled with pride (1 Tim 3:6) and desired a throne of his own, one exalted above God’s. (Isa 14:13) He wanted to be like the Most High (Isa 14:14).
Lucifer wasn’t alone in his quest to be his own god. He convinced one-third of the heavenly host to join him in his rebellion. (Rev 12:4) But God is omniscient (1 Jn 3:20) and omnipotent (Rev 1:8) no being can oppose Him. Lucifer’s war was lost before it even began. His fate is sealed. (Gen 3:15; Rev 20:10)

Why Christians cannot be possessed

When a Christian receives Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit enters that Christian's body, soul and spirit. God has claimed that person for His own and as a result, demons cannot occupy the same place as the Holy Spirit. Satan knows this and that is why he tries so hard to get to people first and have his demons or demonic influence control or affect that person.

The reality of spiritual battle

Even though the Holy Spirit has entered the "new Christian," demons can certainly try to plant thoughts or to affect the thinking process of an individual.

I remember a story that a famous evangelist told about a day he was in his office, and he was in his quiet time reading and studying. From out of nowhere, he noticed vile, lewd sexual thoughts coming into his mind. He was absolutely taken by surprise by this, but knew just what to do. He went into the office next door, which was his associate's office, and asked him to pray with him to banish these "darts" from Satan. With the prayer offered, the darts ceased at that time, and his mind was able to get back to the studying and reading he needed to be doing.
