Islam is the world’s second largest religion, with an estimated 1.5 billion followers. [Source: Major Religions of the World Ranked by Number of Adherents, at Adherents.com -- last accessed Sep. 20, 2007)
In the USA, Islam is among the fastest growing religions (1998). America is said to have 1200 mosques and Islamic centers, and 6-7 million adherents. However, these numbers are being disputed. (See also: Statistics).
Islam also claims significant growth in Africa and is growing - largely through immigration and a higher-than-average birthrate, in Europe (example: Netherlands). The term "Arab" describes an ethnic or cultural identity. Not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Muslims are Arabs. The terms are not interchangeable. (Matter of fact, Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation). The word 'Islam' is derived from the Arabic 'Islama', which means 'submission.' The religion was founded by Muhammad, whom Muslims consider to be the last prophet of the one God, Allah.Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD. "At the age of 40 he had a visitation from the Archangel Gabriel, who revealed to him the contents of the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book, and gave him the task of cleansing Mecca of pagan shrines." (Source)According to the Quran, "[T]he only religion acceptable to God is Submission” (to Allah). (Quran 3:19)

Saudi Government Questions its Wahhabi Roots

Saudi Arabia has practiced a strict Wahhabi form of Islam for centuries, but Islamic extremism has led to religious questioning.

BY: Kate Seelye

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia--Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and a nation where religion and government are deeply entwined and where faith and identity are virtually identical.
But since the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, religion in Saudi Arabia--especially the kingdom's rigidly conservative Wahhabism strain of Islam--has come under increasing criticism both inside and outside of the country, with some critics maintaining it contributes to extremism and terrorism.

Others, however, such as cleric Sheik Abded Muhsin al-Ubakyan, reject the criticism, arguing Saudis are simply following the true path of Islam as preached by the 18th century religious reformer Mohammed Abdel Wahhab.

Muslims believe (without proof) that the Kaba, in its present location, was built by Adam, and rebuilt by Abraham, Ishmael and Muhammad. It is not known when the Kaba was first build but there are no historical records of the Kaba existing before about 400AD.

Although it is claimed that the Noaic flood destroyed the Kaba, and was rebuilt by Abraham, the first known reconstruction of the Kaba was by Muhammad's Quraish tribes, while he was still a polytheist worshipping 360 pagan gods. When Muhammad was young (about 600AD), a flash flood damaged the Kaba and its walls were cracked.

Muslims believe (without proof) that the revered "black stone" (Alhajar Al-Aswad) is a special divine meteorite, that pre-dates creation that fell at the foot of Adam and Eve. It is presently embedded in the southeastern corner of the Kaba. Muslims touch and kiss the black stone during Hajj but non-Muslims are strictly forbidden to even touch it.

What Are Muslim Women's Rights?

At a major Muslim convention, Asra Nomani addresses the crowd about gender equality in Islam.

BY: Asra Nomani

Excerpted from "Standing Alone in Mecca" with permission of HarperSanFrancisco.

Going to the Windy City meant going full circle. I had left in 1992 to pursue a lie. I had walked out of a relationship with a man because he was a Christian. I married another man because he had the right pedigree: Muslim. In the twelve years since, I had tried to resolve the paradoxes within my identity so that I could live truthfully and sincerely.

I was committed to being honest about who I am. Most women, although not all, wore the hijab in Chicago. Even women who didn't ordinarily cover their hair did for the convention so that they wouldn't be the subject of gossip. I cover my hair only in the mosque, and I wasn't going to do it now just for public appearance.
